Last summer i came across this North American Porcupine, erethizon dorsatum, while wandering my old stomping grounds in Wilton New Hampshire. Porcupines will move their jaws rapidly when they are afraid, causing their teeth to chatter. I imagine they do this as a warning. Contrary to popular belief, porcupines do not "throw" their quills, but they do move their tail pretty fast. This guy was pretty small, perhaps only a year old.
They will devour entire stands of trees, eating all the cambium ( inner bark layer) they can get their little claws on. In Native American craft, they would use the quills to decorate moccasins, and other dress ware.
